ArtScienceCamp2 coming up!

I’m getting excited about my next event: the second installment of ArtScienceCamp—an unconference for artists and scientists.

Some of the fun stuff from last year:
Eric Boyd – wearable electronics designer, Toronto Hacklab leader
Dan Falk – Knight Science Journalism fellow, popular science author
Irene Healey – sculptor, designer of breast prostheses

Registration is already going fast—so sign up now if you want to come. And, if you can, do consider contributing to support the event (community sponsorships with tax receipts start at $100).

My upcoming interview with Dina Graser

For my next interview (part of the Toronto Live Interviews series), I’ll be talking with Dina Graser. I always enjoy conversations with Dina, because she has done such very different things in her life, all with passion. Having changed careers myself once or twice, I’m fascinated by someone who does it as frequently and whole-heartedly as Dina has.

Here’s the info:

Wednesday November 3, 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Centre for Social Innovation, Room 120 (215 Spadina Ave)
Tickets are free, but please register as space is limited: http://guestlistapp.com/events/33717

How do people discover and rediscover their calling in life? November’s interviewee, Dina Graser, is someone who has redefined herself again and again: she has been a lawyer, community activist, political campaigner and arts producer. These days she’s in charge of community relations for Metrolinx, the GTA transit agency. The interview will explore what it means to make Toronto a better place, how to create new institutions and make them work, and what it means to follow your own path in life.

Dina will be interviewed by Jen Dodd. Jen is a physicist, designer of public science events including SciBarCamp and Perimeter Institute’s Quantum to Cosmos Festival, and is now managing director of Subtle Technologies, Toronto’s annual festival of art and science.

Location instructions: on arriving at 215 Spadina, go through the Dark Horse cafe to the lobby, go up the stairs to the left of the elevator, and room 120 is through the glass doors straight ahead.

Coming on Wednesday December 1: Interview with Jim Handman, executive producer of CBC’s Quirks & Quarks

Transcendent Man Screening

Transcendent Man is a documentary about Ray Kurzweil that’s screening in Toronto Friday evening as part of the Planet in Focus Film Festival.

Subtle Technologies is collaborating with Planet in Focus and OCADU’s S-Lab to put on a discussion after the screening with Madeline Ashby (science fiction writer), George Dvorsky (futurist and ethicist) and Greg Van Alstyne (design educator). Given the controversial topic, I’m expecting the discussion to be pretty lively.

Here’s the details:
DATE: Friday October 15
TIME: 9:30pm
LOCATION: Royal Ontario Museum
TICKETS: $10-$12
REGISTER HERE

What’s it all about? Watch the trailer (http://www.transcendentman.com) or read what Planet in Focus’s Kathleen Mullen has to say:

“What does it mean to be a futurist? Ray Kurzweil, a certified techno-geek and child prodigy, who has been described as “the restless genius” by The Wall Street Journal and “the ultimate thinking machine” by Forbes, Inc., believes he has found the key to the future of the planet. Known for his bestselling non-fiction book The Singularity is Near, Kurzweil believes that technology is and will further become irrevocably connected to our lives and mortality. Kurzweil is obsessed with how to beat death and is convinced that technology will be our salvation. Transcendent Man is an insightful and challenging documentary that asks some hard questions about the future of our planet.”
